Philosophy

The Ipswich Women’s Centre Against Domestic Violence Inc. (IWCADV) is a community based service operating from a feminist perspective. As an organisation providing services to the community, IWCADV is committed to the abolition of all forms of violence against women and children in society.

We understand that domestic violence is a serious social issue that affects many women and children and that is reinforced by the power imbalances inherent in a patriarchal society. From a feminist perspective we believe that women’s personal experiences of domestic and family violence are connected to the broader social and political forces that oppress and marginalise many groups in society, particularly women and children. We also recognise each individual’s responsibility for their own actions and the need to be accountable for these actions and their consequences. IWCADV is committed to challenging these inequities on both social and personal levels as well as ensuring a work place free of discrimination, violence and misuse of power.

IWCADV provides an extensive range of services on both an individual and community level including telephone information, referral and support services, court support for women, counselling services, group work, and children’s work. Many of these services are offered on an outreach basis to the regional communities serviced by Ipswich Women’s Centre Against Domestic Violence Inc. Services are only provided to women and children survivors of domestic violence. In addition to this, IWCADV has a lead agency role in the community providing a community response to domestic violence issues within this area. This role involves the provision of training and resourcing to workers, networking with other organisations and services and the provision of community education on domestic violence. In the spirit of community development, IWCADV will endeavour to maintain and promote women’s issues on the social and political agenda. All of these services are provided throughout the IWCADV catchment area.

In work with women and children IWCADV will at all times provide services that are safe, accountable and confidential ensuring that the rights of women, young people and children are respected. IWCADV will ensure that the safety of women, young people and children is of paramount concern and will balance this with a respect for the rights of women to make informed decisions over their lives.

IWCADV approaches its lead agency role with a clear commitment to collaborative and accountable work practices which necessitates strong working relationships with other relevant organisations and individuals. IWCADV respects the different perspectives that organisations may work from and welcomes an ongoing dialogue in order to ensure the highest quality services for women and children in the community.

As an organisation, IWCADV is committed to implementing the highest standards of management and staff support in order to create a working environment that is free of discrimination and harassment. The organisation operates on clear and accountable processes and invites feedback from all consumers and community members.
